Blind Spots

What Is A Blind Spot?

When it comes to achieving goals, life is likely to throw obstacles in our way, but it isn’t the outer world that may interfere, we may also hold ourselves back. We many times indulge in self-sabotaging ourselves by not allowing us to see things in our range of vision.

The fears and beliefs that keep you stuck in struggles and away from the life you desire are called blind spots. You create a block around you not allowing any change to happen, hindering your growth.

Example # at your job, you have been given a big responsibility. However, instead of welcoming the opportunity and accepting the challenge and working towards the goals, you constantly fear about not being equipped and quitting it. The negative approach towards a person, work, or situation leads to blind spots.

Uncovering and Conquering Them

Leonardo da Vinci said, “The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions”

Let’s identify and rectify together some of the common blind spots which will help us heighten our self-awareness:

Emotional blindness is like a human eye. You absolutely cannot see what is there unless you move to a new position. If you hate your boss as you had an unpleasant experience with him, it will never help you to learn anything from him as your emotion is making you focus only on one angle

.

# TIP one should not make a permanent view about a person. You won’t perceive anything good from that person whom you don’t consider your well-wisher. It can be another way round, the person whom you love the most may hurt you since you don’t take a stand whenever he/ she misbehaves.

Knowledge blindness: is when we think we know everything about ourselves. The cognitive bias occurs when people of low ability suffer from “illusory superiority”, not ready to evaluate yourself. In turn, it makes you feel overconfident until others prove you wrong.

# TIP Build close friends, who know you best, who can tell your weaknesses without any hesitation. Since they are your true friends they are honest to you. They can point out your blind spots and lead you in the right direction.

Belief blindness: when was the last time you changed your mind? People find discomfort when their belief clashes a piece of new evidence. We don’t accept the new ideas as we strongly believe in the old. We are ready to argue, defend, justify, and keep our secret belief intact whenever confronted by new.

# TIP releases the emotion held in those beliefs. Break the bonds of faith that make an idea or thought so powerful.

Thoughts blindness: too much thinking can eat you alive if you don’t stop them from taking over. They cloud your judgment making you a victim of a blind spot. Overthinking on a certain issue only invites stress and worries.

TIP overthinking often focuses on the past. So to overcome this blind spot you don’t let your mistakes control your future decisions. Switch and live in the moment.

To end, we need to peel off the layers to eat fruit, similarly, we need to peel off the false layers to recognize our strengths in a never-ending journey of self-awareness and defeat your blind spots.
